A search for a missing four-year-old boy in the United States has ended in tragedy after the child and his father were found dead in Texas.
Andres “Harry” Furley was reported missing in Oklahoma earlier this month after his 25-year-old father failed to arrive for a planned custody exchange with the boy’s mother.
Police launched a search for the father and son. Authorities were concerned that the father might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Investigators now believe the case was a murder-suicide. Police suspect the father shot his young son before taking his own life. The investigation details reported so far do not establish a final official finding on the deaths.
Search leads police to Texas
The bodies were discovered on October 14 in Texas, around 193 kilometres from where the pair were first reported missing.
Before they were found, authorities had issued an arrest warrant for the father on suspicion of parental kidnapping.
The search took a new turn after a business owner in Gainesville, Texas, reported a suspicious encounter involving a man and a young child.
Relatives later realised the father and son may have been the people seen in the area. Police then reviewed nearby security camera footage.
According to the report, the footage appeared to show the father and boy walking away from the location. This helped search teams find them.
Family and friends mourn the boy
Harry was laid to rest last week after a funeral service in Texas.
People who knew him shared messages of grief on his online obituary page. They remembered him as a sweet, loving and peaceful child.
The boy’s death has left his mother, Ivette, facing a devastating loss.
A fundraising page has been created to help her with everyday living costs while she grieves. More than $6,500 had been raised at the time of the report.
The fundraiser said the money would help ease some of the financial pressure as Ivette faces the loss of her young son.
The tragedy has brought renewed attention to the devastating impact of family violence and the importance of protecting children during difficult family situations.
